Abstract

The article examines U.S.-Brazilian soluble coffee dispute between 1966-1971 and the period of negotiations for the renewal of the International Coffee Agreement (ICA). Topics discussed include reason for the improvement in the relationship between Brasilia and Washington in the early 1970s, goal of ICA, which was passed in 1962 due to the intensification of the Cold War in Latin America, and danger posed by the issue of Brazil's export subsidies on sales of soluble coffee to the U.S. It also mentions two initiatives that were at the center of the trade dispute with the U.S. on soluble coffee.
