Abstract

Cities differ from rural settlements in terms of their functional characteristics and land use practices. Dominant functional characteristics change as the population of cities increases and cities expand spatially. This change is very rapid, especially in settlements attached to large cities. The aim of this study is to reveal how the city of Etimesgut has changed in terms of its functional characteristics and land use practices since its foundation. In the study, a longitudinal research was carried out in terms of time dimension, one of the basic research types. The image quality of the middle photos belonging to the city of Etimesgut from 1940 and 1975 was increased and the reference points were taken and re-coordinated with the help of the Arc GIS 10.02 program and brought them closer to their real location. Finally, map sets were created by analyzing the land use information on the ready map for 2019. Thus, functional land use maps for the specified years were created and the change was revealed. The city of Etimesgut was planned as an agricultural village settlement in terms of its establishment purpose. However, the proximity of the city to the central settlement texture of Ankara and the existence of the train station in the establishment area caused the duration of commitment to agricultural production not too long. The urbanization adventure, which started with the transportation and agriculture functions for the research area, continues today with the trade health and education functions of the service sector.
