Abstract

Among the approaches that deal with the emergence of political structures with a long-term analysis, Moore's contribution seems very important. Carrying out his analysis in the context of comparative historical sociology, Moore tried to make the emergence of different political structures of democracy, fascism and communism in terms of certain alliances and conflicts between the classes by examining the class structures of exemplary countries in depth. In this respect, Moore, who is among the important names of comparative historical sociology, seems to have influenced many social scientists who came after him. Standing out among Moore's many works that employ the method in question, his main work is "The Social Origins of Democracy and Dictatorship". In this work, Moore emphasized the importance of many factors that played a role in this process. The role played by landlords who have experienced a transformation to commercial mentality and peasants in the revolutions were strongly emphasized. In this study, the analysis of the emergence of democracy in Britain, France and the USA, fascism in Japan and Germany, and communism in Russia and China is examined within the framework of Moore's method. One of Moore's most important contributions in this context should be seen as a powerful challenge to modernization theorists who advocate an ahistorical view of political modernization.
