Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of smoking habits and quality of life of the university students in Sinop University. 2923 students (1648 female, 1275 male) from different Faculties and Applied Schools participated to research. Personal information form and Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF), were utilized as data collection tool. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test were used to analyze. Almost one-third of the participants (%33,4); female students 25% and male students 55.3%, were detected as smoking. Departments with the highest smoking habits are Vocational School (51.1%) and Gerze Vocational School (47%), and departments with the lowest smoking habits are Faculty of Theology (15.2%), Faculty of Education (25%) and Health Services Vocational School (25%). 'Psychological' and 'environmental-cultural' scores of the smoking students were found low compared to who do not smoke. In conclusion, we may suggest that smoking habits of the university students influence their quality of life severely, so non-smoking students have better quality of life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
