Abstract

This article proposes a new approach to the representation of ceremonial cycles in pre- Hispanic religious codices. On the one hand, there is the influence of the vision of the friars, and their collaborators, in the production of historical sources regarding native religión; and the successive modern interpretations are questioned. On the other hand, a different approach is proposed based on field experience in the Mazatec region of Huautla de Jiménez, where nightly ceremonies, known as "evenings" since the time of María Sabina, open the door to rituals and knowledge which is almost completely unexplored in the existing literature on Mesoamerican religion of both the past and present.
