The purpose of this article is to analyze the connections between the formation of the Plata subsystem and the outbreak of the Triple Alliance War (or War of Paraguay). Marked by specific dynamics and pre-national characteristics, as well as weaknesses in the mechanisms of coercion and capital, the political units of the region experienced a complex external environment, which would result in the war. Therefore, the discussion will focus on the problem of interpreting how regional conditions, linked to the process during the formation of national structures, decisive for the chain of causes and conditions, particularly noting Brazil's role in that context.
