Abstract

We fabricated Fe 3 O 4 -polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) magnetic composite nanoparticles using the Shirasu porous glass membrane process and investigated the magneto-responsive magnetorheological (MR) response of them under various applied magnetic fields when dispersed in silicone oil. The morphology and structure of the particles were observed through transmission electron microscopy, Fourier Transform-infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In addition, a typical MR behavior was confirmed when the MR fluid of the Fe 3 O 4 -PMMA nanoparticles was evaluated by a rotation rheometer under applied magnetic fields. The synthesized Fe 3 O 4 -PMMA magnetic composite nanoparticles exhibited a promising potential for application in a wide range of MR application prospects owing to its appropriate size, lower density, and better sedimentation stability.
