Abstract

Contemporary societies are defined by complexity and scenarios of uncertainty and risk. Achieving sustainability is the biggest challenge. To become sustainable, societies must strive to meet the basic needs of their populations while not depleting and/or degrading their natural capital. To ensure the sustainability of societies, especially those that live in cities, the United Nations (UN) created in 2015 the "Agenda 2030" based on 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) to serve as a parameter within reach of this ideal. Thus, this article aims to discuss how societies, environments, cities and energies articulate in the Brazilian context, and how they can contribute to the realization of the dimensions of the SDGs. I hope that the reflections developed here can contribute in some way to the formulation of social and environmental knowledge and its diffusion in the academic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
