Abstract

Introduction: The action of ultraviolet rays can cause several damages to the human being, being skin cancer and photoaging the most studied. Ultraviolet rays facilitate gene mutations and suppress the skin's immune system. Objective: to carry out a literature review on the characteristics of sunscreens and their mechanism of action. Development: The application of photoprotectors as a direct method of protection has been widely discussed in the literature, being suggested for the care of all skin neoplasms. Intrinsic factors influence the existence of these or not, but the geographic location and some precautions such as the use of sunscreen and the appropriate time to receive the incidence of sunlight contribute directly to the appearance or not of cancer and photoaging. Final considerations: the present study made it possible to verify the relationship between the increased incidence of skin cancer cases and other related problems caused by excessive sun exposure, with sunscreen being the main barrier to prevent these damages.
