Abstract

In this study, optimization of parameters affecting noise level and surface roughness during turning of SAE 4140 steel is aimed. Cutting parameters (feed rate, speed and depth of cut) were examined at 3 levels. The experiments were carried out in accordance with the test plan obtained according to the Response Surface Method. According to the results of the analysis made with the Minitab 18 program, the most effective parameters for noise were obtained as spindle speed, feed rate and depth of the cut, respectively. The most effective parameters for surface roughness were obtained as the feed rate and spindle speed. Optimum levels are determined for both volume level and surface roughness. These values are suggested as 0.1 m s-1 for spindle speed, 750 rpm for feed rate and 0.5 mm for depth of cut. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
