Abstract

In this Special Issue on new cycling research in Aotearoa, we bring you four new articles that explore aspects of our relationship with the bicycle. Whereas most cycling occurred in neighbourhood settings close to home, the perceived transgressions of cyclists during lockdown received considerable media attention, and some types of cyclists did not come out well in this reportage. Although Aotearoa is now a low-cycling nation, there is considerable cycling diversity beyond the lycra-clad riders. Cycling among Maori may be slightly more likely to be driven by transport poverty, and when Maori design cycling programmes they also identify different opportunities: including the possibilities of cycling as a way to build whanaungatanga, as well as to learn about and connect to Papatuanuku.
