Abstract

Th is paper presents the phytosociological description of a drained swamp community, Veratro albi-Fraxinetum angustifoliae, encountered so far only in the following localities in the Danube-Tisza Interfluve, Central Hungary: Dabas: Turjános; Soltszentimre: Kullér-erdő; Páhi: Pecznyik-erdő, Közös-erdő; Tabdi: Tabdi-erdő; Kiskőrös: Szücsi-erdő; Kecel: Berek-erdő. Th e habitat of this community is transitional between that of alder swamps (Fraxino pannonicae-Alnetum glutinosae) and hardwood riparian forests (Fraxino pannonicae-Ulmetum), but its direction of succession tends more towards the lily-oaks forests (Polygonato latifolii-Quercetum roboris). Th e association is characterized by high proportions of character species of Alnion glutinosae and Molinion coeruleae as well as Quercetea pubescentis-petraeae s. l., whereas character species of the order Fagetalia are almost completely absent. Th e undergrowth of this forest association hosts several rare, oft en threatened species, such as Dryopteris carthusiana, Iris sibirica, Leucojum aestivum, Listera ovata, Ophioglossum vulgatum, Veratrum album, Vitis sylvestris.
