Abstract

The lungfishes, or Dipnoi, form a depauperate clade of sarcopterygian fishes living today in the freshwater systems of eastern Australia, Africa, and South America. It is reminiscent of the equivalent bone in I F. martini i , except that in the latter species the anterior portion of the ossification corresponds to the widest part of the bone, whereas in I F. annekempae i sp. nov. the anterior portion is significantly narrower than the posterior portion. In this model of I F. jurassicus i , the bone shows no anteroventral extension and it is unclear how the mandible articulates with the skull (in I Neoceratodus i , the quadrate is cartilaginous and occurs as an outgrowth from the process of the posterior bone of the lateral series, and the situation was likely similar in most extinct post-Devonian lungfishes; Kemp, [9]). Abbreviations: a.m.b, anterior bone of the medial series; a.ml.b, anterior bone of the mediolateral series; p.l.b, posterior bone of the lateral series; p.m.b, posterior bone of the medial series; p.ml.b, posterior bone of the mediolateral series; x, X bone.
