Abstract

Francis Alÿs, a Belgian living in Mexico for more than thirty years, is a contemporary artist with a performance-based career, where he also includes a simple type of animation. The interaction between his animated films and the rest of his work place the first ones in an intertwined territory, letting them connect to other artistic registers, as well as transforming them by extending their possibilities within drawing. This relation makes their categorisation difficult, so that they avoid rigid classifications. Lastly, the fact that all selected animations are structured as loops generates a particular type of viewing, in which spectator plays both with dispossession and the illusion of control of the image.
