Abstract

The rule of "pico y placa" in different cities in Colombia is implemented to reduce the number of vehicles in transit during the day or during peak hours and as an effect, a decrease in gases emission. This work consists of the realization of an agent-based simulation model that allows to evaluate the implementation of this rule in the municipality of Medellín, its effects in terms gases emission and impact at the level of vehicular crowding. The primary information is that provided by the Mobility Secretary of Medellín and interviews with experts. Subsequently, the need to control the number of vehicles that transit is identified, since the amount of CO (carbon monoxide) emissions shows a significant decrease with the implementation of the rule respect to a system without mobility restrictions. It is also observed that the travel time in the selected crossing decreases considerably, due to the lower number of vehicles present. It also identifies to carry out further studies that shows a behaviour closer to reality, in terms of a larger geographical region and that include a larger set of pollutants when evaluating the simulation.
