Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine relationships between human capital accumulation and economic development in Turkey for the time period of 1991-2016 by implementing the time series analysis methods. According to the results; (a) all variables exhibit unit root process, (b) long-run relationships exist among variables, (c) according to the long-run parameter estimations, education expenditures positively affect economic development, while there is no statistically significant relationship between health expenditures and economic development, (d) unemployment has a negative and statistically significant effect on economic development, whereas inflation has a negative and statistically insignificant effect on economic development. In this regard, education-oriented human capital-led development policies can positively affect economic development in Turkey. Besides, policies towards reducing unemployment rates can increase the capability of individuals by creating new job opportunities, which in turn promotes economic development.
