Introduction: currently, composite resin is the dominant dental material in the restorative dentistry scenario, due to its conservative treatment, low cost and excellent esthetics. However, its clinical performance depends on a delicate execution technique and several factors that are related to the success and longevity of the restorative treatment. Objective: to discuss the main causes responsible for the various types of failures and defects that result in the replacement or repair of the restoration with direct composite resin. Methodology: literature review through bibliographic search in the electronic databases PubMed / Medline, Scielo and Scopus, through the selection of relevant articles published between 2005 and 2020. Results: there are several factors that interfere in the longevity and durability of restoration with composite resin: the technique of the dental surgeon, the material used, the clinical conditions and even the behavior and response of the patient himself. Conclusion: as there are many causes that contribute to the replacement and / or repair of the restoration, it is essential to understand the relationship between what was performed and the reason for the failure, so that the life expectancy of the restoration is satisfactory, both for the patient and professional, further studies related to the theme are essential in order to improve its application in practice.
