Abstract
- Introduction: The stem cells present in the dental pulp are undifferentiated cells with unlimited capacity for self-renewal and differentiation, representing a high potential for use in regenerative medicine Objective: Conduct a literature review on stem cells derived from dental pulp, emphasizing their differentiation, proliferation, and chemical mediators mechanisms involved in these processes. Material and Methods: A bibliographic review of studies published in the last 20 years (2000-2020), carried out by a search on the databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library), and Google Scholar. The following descriptors were used for the research: stem cells, dental pulp, and tissue engineering. After careful filtering, 38 articles were selected for inclusion in the study. Results: The dental pulp stem cells demonstrate differentiation capacity in the mesodermal, ectodermal, and endodermal strains and express a genetic pattern similar to bone marrow stem cells. Conclusion: Dental pulp stem cells have a high potential for proliferation and capacity that originates from different cell lines of differentiation. The key to the application of these cells in these therapies is to know the expression of the molecules used in these processes. Further studies are needed so that the mechanisms of differentiation and proliferation are fully elucidated and used safely in regenerative medicine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
