Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore trends and research patterns on the theme of governance with an emphasis on water management in Brazil over the past 20 years and to discuss how efficient water resource management can contribute to regional development. The analysis focused on identifying the main theoretical references and the fundamental themes addressed in the selected studies. We seek to understand the role of governance in relation to the management of water resources in Brazil, and the role of civil society in this process based on the analysis of selected articles. The methodology is characterized by a bibliometric research that identifies the scientific behavior of the area in order to form a diagnostic about what are the main publications related to the theme of water management and governance. The results founded identified that there is a high interest of the scientific community in this field of study. It highlights that there is a need for deepening of knowledge and conceptual base on this subject. Therefore, this work helps to provide guidance for research opportunities in this field of studies.
