Abstract

The paper examines alternative forms of the museum – concepts of contemporary art museums by artists in comparison with the traditional museum buildings and following the initial artists’ interventions in the exhibition space formed in the first half of the 20th century. The thesis analyses several concepts of the contemporary art museum by active artists from the 70s-90s of the 20th century, which according to their authors, present an ideal platform for art presentation. The analysis reveals that the artists bringing museum concepts are not in full accordance in their alternative view of the museum, and bring individual views influenced by personally important aspects of the museum and exhibition space or even the art exhibition environment. What is possible to generalize for these proposals is the ambition to be the legitimate creators of contemporary art museums in order to better understand the exhibitions from the point of view of their creator and to identify themselves with the presented art. It is also possible to generalize the effort and in many cases the fulfilled ambition to design a superior platform for the optimal presentation of the art exhibited. The paper is beneficial in showing the concepts of contemporary art museums by artists who, due to their theoretical nature have not had the chance to become icons as numerous realized contemporary art museums designed by architects have. The absence of the examined concepts within the museum topic research would deprive us of the specific point of view of the art creators on the subject of contemporary art museum.
