Abstract

This article examines the communication style used by officials in public media to announce the decisions taken and the necessary measures in relation to the restriction of the spread of Covid-19. Two case studies with Bulgaria and the United Kingdom will be observed illustrating two different kinds of rhetoric and outlining the cultural differences from the perspective of Hofstede's cultural dimension theory. In Bulgaria, the announcements used in public speaking to the people about the pandemic measures were focused on provoking an emotional response from the negative spectrum such as instigating fear and panic. In the UK, the Government's statements were appealing to the positives of compassion, national pride, and constructive action with everyone's involvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
