Abstract
- Objective To investigate the effects of propofol and sevoflurane on cognitive function and memory immediately after general anesthesia (GA) under laparoscopic cholecystectomy(LC) within 4 hours after surgery. Methods In a prospective double-blind randomized control study, 160 patients aged 18 to 60 years undergoing elective LC were randomly divided into two groups. Data analysis was done with California verbal learning test (CVLT),Digital span test (DST), Rivermead behavioral memory test (RBMT),Mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score, and semantic memory test. Aldrete scoring system and visual pain simulation were used post-operatively. The level of statistical significance was set atP<0.05. Results There was no statistically significant difference in age, anaesthesia time and hemodynamics between the two groups (P>0.05) . Immediate cognitive and dominance memory after the propofol group was more affected. Results of most tests, such as semantic memory test,MMSE score, and DST, were significantly different between the two groups at 5 min, 1 h,and 2 h post-operatively(P<0.05),but there was no significant difference at 4 h(P>0.05). There were no significant differences in RBMT between 2 hours and 4 hours after operation (P>0.05), but CVLT values were statistically significant between groups even at 4h after surgery(P<0.05) . Conclusion Compared with immediate post-operative sevoflurane, propofol had a significant impact on cognitive functions, and sevoflurane anesthesia might be a better option in day surgeries.
