Abstract

Nurullah Ataç pioneered the establishment of literary criticism as an independent genre in Turkish literature. Not only his thinking had a notable impact on the cultural and artistic life of his time, but he also heavily influenced the intellectual life of later generations. Studies about Ataç's place inside Turkish literary and intellectual history focus mostly on his critiques and his conception of language. Meanwhile, Ataç's theses on literary theory tend to be neglected, and his stand in debates concerning the fundamental issues of aesthetics remains ignored. This essay aims at compiling Ataç's views on literature that he expressed through various critiques in an unsystematic manner. These will be classified and analyzed in order to show that he sustained a consistent and solid aesthetic theory. Presenting Ataç's views on the old and contemporary problems of literature and discussing his contributions to art theory are among the other goals of this piece. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
