Abstract
- This article focuses on how New Yorkers helped islanders in the hurricane's aftermath. As the peoples of the islands of Grenada, Jamaica and Cayman pick up pieces following the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Ivan, their fellow countrymen in New York City have joined with sympathizers to lend a helping hand. An umbrella relief emergency center directed by the Brooklyn based Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been established, with smaller efforts mounted by nationals of individual countries affected by the hurricane. In Brooklyn, home to most West Indians living in New York City, borough president Marty Markowitz said that New Yorkers are pulling together to assist those impacted overseas.
