Abstract

It is an undeniable fact that drink consumption occupies an important place in human life. As an integral part of food, beverages are also consumed after meals. Although it may seem like an obligation, foods and beverages are shaped by the society and the culture that belongs to that society. Every society has adapted some beverages for this reason or another while some others have been forgotten in time. When the island was conquered by the Turks in 1571, people from different parts of Anatolia were settled in the island, and they brought together the culture of catering with other cultural elements. They also invented different foods and beverages using various ingredients. Inaddition, due to the cultural interaction with the Greek community in the island, some beverages are consumed by Greeks whereas some other unique to Greek community are accepted by Turks. In the study, the beverages which have an important function in the lives of the Turkish Cypriots will be displayed and their usage and social functions will be evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
