Abstract

When the general condition of the religious institutions and foundations located in Hasankeyf is considered, it may be argued that they have a Sunni Muslim character in direct relationship with the identity of the civilizations that have lived here in the historical process. However, the conducted studies have revealed that especially the heterodox dervishes, who have escaped in the process after the Mongolian invasion, have established their hermitages and lodges in Hasankeyf, as it was the case in many cities of Anatolia, and attempted to spread their thoughts here. In this context, the Sheikh Çoban Hermitage, which was established on behalf of Sheikh Çoban, who was a Vefaî sheikh, and Baba Mahmud Haydarî Lodge, which was apparently a Kalenderî lodge, are located in Hasankeyf. It is clear that those structures, which received their names from the names of Kalenderî and Vefaî sheikhs, were established with a heterodox understanding. How were those two foundations, located in Hasankeyf, structured and operated? Where did the revenues of those foundations come from? How many personnel worked in them and what were they doing? In this study, the general condition of the Hasankeyf Sheikh Çoban and Baba Mahmud Haydarî foundations, the stages that they have encountered over the historical process, and their impact on the social structure of the city will be studied by benefitting from various archival documents.
