Abstract

This article presents information on the a research project on the Skagit River, connecting British Colombia and Washington, being performed by archeological researcher Ed Liebow. Dwindling salmon runs threaten to make the Skagit River a divide between neighbors. Earthwatch Institute's teams working with Liebow documented oral histories to identify cultural "values that matter," the first step toward finding common ground. Janna Gage lives on land that her great grandparents bought in 1881 just a few miles from where the river flows into Puget Sound. Liebow said he hopes that his research, part of Earthwatch's Pacific Northwest Conservation Research Initiative, will help the residents identify the goals they have in common.
