Abstract

Narrative abilites are decisive concerning participation in social and professional contexts. This review summarizes background and typical development of narration in German-speaking children. The authors describe interdependencies between narration and different language areas. As morpho-syntactic complexity affects microstructure in narratives, the connection between narration and productive grammar is considered in detail. Narrative deficits frequently occur in children with language impairment and need to be perceived at (pre-)school age. Untreated difficulties persist into adulthood and might hamper professional development. Communication at text level is relevant for participation (ICF) and should be included into language therapy. Therefore, a close consultation of parents and teachers is necessary. A child's narrative abilities as well as morpho-syntactic performance should be considered in both diagnostics and therapy planning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
