Abstract

This paper is intended as a compendium of good practices to assess whether luminescence dating can provide researchers with valuable chronological information for ceramic samples. It is organized into two main sections. The first section provides an introduction to luminescence dating, including its physical principles, the applied measurement procedures, and a brief summary on a new dating technique (RHX) not based on luminescence. This section aims to provide non-specialists with a background on the physical principles underlying luminescence dating, in order to enable an understanding of the issues that may affect the reliability of luminescence ages and a critical assessment of the results from luminescence laboratories. The second section presents a series of case studies which illustrate the use of these methods, how they can be applied, and what results can be obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
