Abstract

This document describes the variables underlying academic stress (AS) in students who take mathematics subjects in an administrative and accounting faculty (Faceac for its acronym in Spanish) in a private University in Bogotá, Colombia. The academic stress inventory (ASI) used was the one proposed by Polo, Hernández and Pozo in 1996, in order to measure two dimensions: stress responses and stress generating activities. When applying the IEA, Cronbach's Alpha coefficient was verified and the principal component analysis (PCA) was used to determine the variables underlying academic stress. 463 students participated in this research, which correspond to 78.1% of the active population in a Faceac. Results after verifying all the statistical assumptions, indicated that the instrument reliability is 0.927; the forced exploratory data analysis with PCA (KMO of 0,913, sig. 0,000, gl 300), with the Varimax with Kaiser rotation method gave three variables interpreting the 49.6888% of the variance. The variables are responses to academic stress, students-mathematical knowledge interaction and evaluation. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the AS of students taking mathematics in a Faceac needs to be dealt with from the teaching activity, together with area programs directed from university wellbeing aimed at proper management of AS.
