Abstract

The article explores the issues surrounding Iraq's oil and energy industries. Topics covered include the health problems caused by the burning gas and chemicals spewing out of the oil wells in the oil towns across southern Iraq, the reasons the practice known as flaring have been reduced by many countries, and the hindrances to Iraq's efforts to build expensive plants and pipelines to recapture gas from oil wells.
