Abstract

The article focuses on how the B–17 was used in the Pacific theater in World War II as a low-level antishipping bomber. It mentions U.S. Army Air Corps (USAAC) announced a requirement for a "multiengine bomber to perform a coastal defense mission" and Boeing entered their Model 299 which became the famed B–17 Flying Fortress. It also mentions Frank M. Andrews, commander of General Headquarters (GHQ) Air Force, was a strategic bombardment proponent.
