Abstract

The article discusses molecular characterization and mapping of the canine cyclin D1 (CCND1) gene. During the last decade the dog has gained in importance as a model organism for the investigation of mechanisms underlying human genetic disease, including cancer. Immunohistochemical analyses of cyclin D1 expression in canine mammary tumours using a polyclonal antibody against human cyclin D1 revealed contradictory data. A researcher found cyclin D1 expression in only two adenocarcinomas of 75 mammary lesions tested. Mapping and sequencing of the canine CCND1 gene and corresponding protein could help to elucidate the role of cyclin D1 in dogs and its usefulness as model organism concerning this matter.
