Abstract

Chicagoans got another dose of crumbling concrete on August 24, when 43-year-old chunks fell from under the city's 33rd Street Bridge. Illinois Dept. of Transportation engineers closed four highway lanes under the bridge to "sound" loose concrete, then reopened the lanes later that day. The bridge is slated for reconstruction as part of a $430-million rehab due in 2007. The bridge's deterioration came several weeks after city building officials ordered the Cubs baseball team to inspect its 90-year-old Wrigley Field ballpark. The city still has its eyes on Wrigley, having most recently completed a city-funded inspection of the park on August 22.
