Abstract
- Rectosigmoid cancer resection is burdened with a high ratio of anastomosis dehiseence compared to other intestinal anastomoses. Although the excision is made in macroscopically noninvolved issues, some cancer cells can be present in the line of incision. Local healing process may facilitate single cancer cells to proliferate due to a high cytokine concentration in the wound. Growing tumor cells will stretch the wound, hampering the process of its contraction. Scientists observed impaired healing of tumor wounds, with scarce mononuclear infiltrates, reduced proliferative activity of fibroblasts and no connective tissue formation, although a phenotypical similarity was observed between cell populations around tumor and normal wounds on histology.
