Abstract

Recognizing virtues as "contextual and communal", Duffy casts a vision of virtue ethics grounded in Aristotelian philosophy yet tangibly rhetorical (67). Though never satisfactorily answering this challenge, Duffy crafts a vision of virtue ethics as committed to equality and expansive enough to include new, more feminist virtues including "feistiness, self-respect, [and] playfulness" (83). Though acknowledging "off-the-rack syllabi" are insufficient to the task, Duffy suggests that writing teachers may cultivate students' fluency with rhetorical virtues by integrating the virtues into their classrooms (120).
