Abstract

BACKGROUND: The prediction of CD4 T lymphocytes in patients with HIV-AIDS generates benefits in the field of public health, reduces costs in monitoring and time in decision making. OBJECTIVE: To apply the theory of the sets and probability to predict the amount of T CD4 lymphocytes that exist in peripheral blood taking into account only the values of blood count. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A prospective study was done from January to December 2018 applying the methodology described by Rodríguez et al. The values of leukocytes, lymphocytes from a blood count and previous CD4 were used, the sets A, B, C and D were determined, the probability of the appearance of specific combinations of leukocyte, lymphocyte and CD4 values was calculated, in ranges of 1000 leukocytes for all the cases. RESULTS: There were studied 232 cases. Values below 570 CD4 cells were predicted from ranges below 9000 leukocytes, with a percentage of effectiveness ranging from 91 to 100%. For ranges below 3000 leukocytes and the range of 8000 to 8999 was 100% effective. CONCLUSION: The probability theory is applicable to the Mexican population. It is effective and will reduce costs to the health system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
