Abstract

In 1927, when the first census of the Republic period was made, the population of Rize was determined to be 171,667 and it was ranked as the 37th in the provinces. Although the natural population growth of Rize is generally parallel with the national average, the real population growth has always been low due to the high migration from the economic weakness. The migration which declined in the 1950s with the effect of tea farming accelerated again in the 1960s. In the ninety one-year-period from 1927 to 2018, the population of Rize has increased by 2.3 times, and the increase in the country's population has been six times. The population of the province reached up to 348.608 in 2018 and was ranked as the 56th in the provinces. Within the scope of this study, the reasons of the increase and decrease in population in Rize were examined and tried to be revealed by discussing the population change of Rize in the Republican period. It is not enough to obtain only the census results of the relevant region in the studies to be carried out on the population. It is necessary to investigate the administrative, geographical, social, economic, and cultural aspects of the region well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
