Abstract

The article retraces the path of Manya Hartmayer, a German-born Jewish woman who survived five Nazi concentration camps, from the railroad tracks to the Emergency Refugee Shelter at Fort Ontario in Oswego, New York during World War II. Historical information is provided about the conversion of the fort into a shelter for refugees, occupations selected by the War Refugee Board to work at the shelter, and the return of some refugees to Europe and naturalization of other refugees in the U.S.
