Abstract

Objective: Assess the rate, reasons and moment of approval in the Safety Protocol for Thirst Management in the immediate postoperative period in the first hour of anesthetic recovery. Methodology: Descriptive, transversal and quantitative study performed at a philanthropic teaching hospital in South of Brazil. Results: Non probabilistic sample of 98 patients, being 81 evaluated by Safety Protocol for Thirst Management in five moments of application. Fluid fasting time in the preoperative presented a median of 11:37 hours (1Q 8: 56-3Q 13:45). Thirst prevalence was 81.6% (n = 80) and mean thirst intensity was 5.6 (SD 3.1). The approvals percentage in the evaluation of the Protocol increased gradually according to the application moments (35.8%, 49.4%, 60.5%, 71.6%, 71.6%). The criterion with the highest disapproval index was the level of consciousness. Conclusion: After 30 minutes of anesthetic recovery, 60.5% of patients were able to receive thirst relief strategies safely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
