Les présents diplomatiques entre Asie et Europe à l'époque moderne.

Diplomatic presents were far from constituting a meaningless formality in early modern times. The malleability of the meaning that actors assigned to these presents made them, on the contrary, an essential political element that could, simultaneously, be a source of misunderstanding. Drawing on the contributions of the "new" diplomatic history, global history, and connected history, this article suggests ways of thinking about diplomatic gifts. The specificity of the exchange of presents taking place in the Eurasian space is also analyzed in the context of the "first globalization". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
