- Reports that Sir Isaac Pitman, inventor of Pitman shorthand, is revered as a deity by a small group of shorthand devotees in India. S.V. Ramaswamy, a former banker whose mission is to preserve the skill that has often provided jobs in India's huge and document-driven bureaucracy; Ramaswamy's Stenographer's Guild, a small vocational school that is one of the last places in Madras to teach shorthand; Art of shorthand, which is disappearing as courts and legislatures use stenography machines, computers and video cameras to track proceedings.
