Abstract
- This paper reflects on the concept of nation that operated in the early 19th century in New Granada, amidst the temporary hinge that the independence wars against the Spanish Crown meant to the establishment of the state. For this, the concept of nation in the pre-independence Hispanic world is reviewed, based on Annino and Guerra's research. Then, a reconstruction of the major features of the Spanish Empire's political crisis between 1808-1810 is attempted. Finally, the New Granada independence ideals are placed in the framework of social conflicts that entailed a confrontation for local and regional political leadership not only between Americans and peninsula residents, but also among Criollo elites.
