Comments on the resignation and personal public confession of New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey that he was gay and had had an extramarital affair with another man. Issue of patronage, in light of the fact that the man with whom he allegedly had an affair had been on the state payroll; Reactions of politicians, analysts and voters to McGreevey's announcement, including Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, who announced in 1987 that he was gay; Procedural questions that were raised by McCreevey's speech.
