Abstract
- In this book, fifteen authors address the issue of scientism from a philosophical perspective. A philosophical doctrine closely connected to scientism is reductionism. Mariam Thalos even sees this as the core of scientism and she criticizes both epistemological and ontological forms of reductionism, specifically a general reductionism of human behavior to either biology or physics. Clearly, this argument is aimed only at the more extreme protagonists of scientism, since several authors who subscribe to some form of scientism are happy to accept that there is a lot of legitimate ordinary knowledge, as long as that is continuous with science.
