Abstract

The given names of people which are seen as a mirror of a nation's history, culture, language, religion and traditions are of great importance in determining the cultural map of the nation which is discussed and in determining the tradition of vocabulary and naming. Therefore it is neccessary to reveal all the aspects of these traditions of the Turks who are known to have a deep-rooted tradition of naming, to determinate of the names of men and women used in various periods of history in order to preserve this tradition, and to examine them comparatively in terms of their origin, meaning, structure and reasons. For this reason, in our study the female names which are taken from Sivas court records were analyzed and compared with female names still used today, in terms of their origin, meaning, structure and reasons. The most important result of the study is; there has been no major changes in the name-giving tradition in the region despite two centuries. The other results of the study are as follows: love of the prophet and the phenomenon of religion is the most effective element in giving names to girls; the most of the names have Arabic origin and simple structure.
