The act of listening: radio monitoring, 1930–1990.

The article offers information on the history of international radio broadcasting and transnational history of technology, media and (mass) communication in twentieth century. Topics discussed include the value to academics of the very extensive collection of transcripts compiled by the British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) Monitoring Service; information relevant to political decision-making and foreign policy objectives; and use of radio monitoring at various key-moments.
