Abstract

It is very possible that anyone with some active interest in the world of animation (or who follows on Facebook someone like this) has been found in recent months with a clip, a gameplay or informative video about Cuphead. It is unlikely, however, that you have encountered the trailer. Nevertheless, it is one of the most reviewed games since four years ago, and it has crossed the barriers of gamers’ communities, reopening the famous debate of whether the videogame is art. And is that, as if it were the owner of an ad of dubious origin, it is "the dissemination strategy that brings head to marketing managers." In this review, José María Palenzuela overviews the present state of the indie videogame industry in the context of the ongoing crisis of the AV culture, and its evolution to new more interdisciplinary formats, with the consequent dissolution of the barriers between genres, starting from the analysis of the unpredictable success of the videogame Cuphead.
