Abstract

The article examines the problems that middle class families in the U.S. face caused by the use of colleges of expected family contribution (EFC) to determine a student's financial need. Topics covered include how the EFC can be misleading and unable to accurately reflect a student and their family's ability to pay for college, and the tendency of students to pay more that what the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) estimates amidst the rise in college prices.
