Abstract
- This paper examines the intersectional issues of race, class and gender as they relate to the 1918 strike staged by female workers at several steam laundries in Vancouver, British Columbia for an improvement of wages and working conditions, based on accounts of several strike participants. Topics covered include systemic racism against Chinese residents and Chinese-run hand laundries and narration of the strike from Helena Gutteridge, Ellen Goode, Matilda Cruickshank and Josephine Wilson.
